Focus on the Positive...

There is something about
a grateful heart that changes everything.
Well, it can... it can change everything
--at least from an internal perspective.

This world is overflowing with negativity,
mud-slinging, half-truths,
anger and fear, doubt and unbelief...
Everywhere we look,
we find both the wounded
and those doing the wounding!
(Insert: 'Hurt people hurt people' is not an excuse, but it is oh so true!)

It seems the Darkness is getting Darker.
The gravitational pull is strong
to see only the Hopeless and the Hatred.
But something shifts deep down on the inside
when we push against the shadows,
and lean in fully to the Light!

It actually gets Brighter!

When we look for the good... for the Gold...
for the Love and the Light,
well... Jesus Himself told us
we will find what we seek,
and Ann with no fanciful 'e'
taught us to count one thousand gifts
and how the simple act of counting
helps us to pay attention and
when we pay attention in Seeking,
Oh my goodness,
how we will Find!

I don't know about you...
but some days it is hard to believe
this crazy, chaotic world is not
just spinning right off its' axis.
It feels so hard and cold...
many people are speaking for God,
but they are not speaking LIKE Him.

It's so easy to go negative.
It doesn't take any imagination at all.

This is a broken and bleeding-out world.
But God, you guys!
But God!

Our loving, good, good Father...
the creator of Heaven and Earth...
He has not and will not
abandon or forsake us.
Even if/when it feels like
we've been abandoned or forsaken!

The pull towards darkness
is hot and heavy
and we can feel the sinking of
our hopes and dreams...

Depression is a real thing...

and a serious, there-is-no-shame,
I-want-to-listen-or-help-or-to-do
-something... to-help-pull-you-out...
or-make-you-feel-better.

So I am not trying to make this trivial...
I'm saying the Negativity is not a lie...
Things are a hot mess...
WE are sometimes a hot mess...

But I can't quit the wisdom of Philippians 4...
I can't stop pushing against the pull
and putting these verses into practice
and focusing on the positive...
I can't stop seeing the difference it makes
to be thankful and to count my blessings
rather than recite my complaints.

Let's wrap this up by reading what Paul tells us
to do INSTEAD of fretting or worrying!

"Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies." ~Phil 4:6-9 The Message
The more we activate this scripture,
the easier it gets to seek and to find
blessings all around us!
They are there...
because He is at work.

I am sure you have some
negative people in your life.
You know who I'm talkin' about.
They never seem to have
Good news to share...
They are well informed
of all the Bad all around,
and can talk about it for hours on end.
Now some of what they say
may be informative and accurate,
but even so, you never walk away feeling
refreshed and uplifted.
Ever.

Let's be people who encourage and uplift...
who Speak Life and Shine Jesus
and Give Grace and Love well...
Let's have the freedom
to talk about real life,
but let's purpose to bring it all
back around again to
Philippians 4 and thinking on
"whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
whatever is right, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute,
if there is any excellence
and if anything worthy of praise,
dwell on these things."

Let's be Hope-Filled Hunters of Grace
and Finders of Beauty!
Let's be Positive Dwellers!
Just try it and watch and see...

Come back tomorrow for some impromptu fun!
Every Friday during this series, I'll be participating in the Five Minute Friday Community and will attempt to write a post that fits in this series using the one-word prompt!

  1. Three gems I am pondering from your piece . . .
    1. "many people are speaking for God, but they are not speaking LIKE Him." I want to be more thoughtful about my words. I want to be one who speaks like Him.
    2. Negative people ... "are well informed of all the Bad all around." I want to be careful of the content of my thinking and words. I want to be well informed of the good around me. And I want to be careful who I associate with.
    3. "Let's have the freedom to talk about real life, but let's purpose to bring it all
back" to Philippines 4. YES. Yes. Yes. Let's be real and know that while we ponder truth, God hears, listens, and acts.
Can you tell I got a lot out of this writing? Thanks for sharing.

    1. I'm so glad you have some take-aways that you are still pondering! (Me, too! That line about not speaking LIKE Him is powerful... I'm hoping to be mindful of it for quite awhile!) Thanks so much for joining the journey!

  2. Karilee, I love your writing voice and this post is so timely. The call to be encouragers is so needed today. I read recently a psychologist recommended, assume the person you are talking to knows something you need to know. This is a great reminder to speak like Jesus. This will leave the greatest impact.

    1. Right? I mean, Jesus was (and IS!) the BEST active listener around!!! So glad this resonated with you! It's so easy to not pay attention to the pull towards the negative, but it is so draining, and so NOT life-giving or encouraging! Thankful to have you along on this journey in becoming queens of giving the benefit of the doubt!

  3. Love reading your words, Karrilee!! I try very hard to always be positive; to focus on those things that are good and true and positive! Thank you for these words of encouragement to keep lifting my eyes to Him and remain a Positive Dweller!

    1. Thank you, Barbara! There is so much negative to be found... so much darkness and fallen-ness all around... I'm not saying to ignore that or not deal with it... but it's so necessary to bring our thoughts back around to what is pure, lovely, noble, etc! Positive Dwelling with you, my friend! Thanks for stopping by and joining in!
