It's our LAST Saturday together, sweet readers!
Well, during this Series anyway!
I normally do not write on the weekends... nor do I normally write THIS many posts in a week (or a month!) But you have endured... or stopped by whenever you were able. Please know that if you want to read the whole series or catch up on any that you may have missed along the way, you can click HERE for a Landing Page for 31 Days of Life Happens and so We Pray!
Today, as we wrap up our week focused on the Church... well, how could we not talk about the Power and Importance of Unity, right?
It's so important!
In fact, we are going to pray through Jesus' prayer for us found in the Gospel of John on Monday, but the fact that as the hours were ticking down, what the Lord was crying out to the Father for, for us, was Unity.
He's crying out for that still...
Listen, God said that the world would know we are Christians by our love.
Ouch! ...know what I mean?
I mean, I'm not sure how YOUR facebook feed reads lately, but mine? Well - I believe in diversity and so I have all kinds of friends and oh my goodness... there is a need for unity within the Body and a need for us to remember the call to love --which, by the way, trumps the call to be right!
Now, I'm not talking theology --I'm talking in general, in our normal, every day lives... love wins! (Or it's supposed to, anyway!)
...And let's remember the quote from Bill Johnson that we touched on yesterday:
Jesus is perfect theology.
I know... this political season has been ROUGH.
No matter how passionate (or not) you are about any (or all --or none!) of the candidates... no matter how
After the election, approximately HALF of the Nation is going to feel like it's the end of the world and they are not going to understand how the other half could have possibly voted with a clear conscience.
It's always been divided and intense, but it is volatile this year. It feels heavy and hopeless and overflowing with anger and accusations. You can feel the tension rising.
And yet, Jesus is praying that we will be one, as He and the Father are One. This is still His hearts' cry!
Jesus doesn't expect us all to come to the same conclusions. He knows we all have our opinions and will weigh things out and come to decisions and I think, in general, He's okay with that. He made us individually, uniquely and He is not shocked when we disagree.
But I believe He longs for us to discover that, truly, we are better together! We are made for relationship and for connection and we live and release and increase the Kingdom when we can do it, side by side!
We talked earlier in the series of the Power of Agreement. It's a real thing... a real powerful thing. So of course the enemy is going to sow division and separation. Of course he is going to cause there to be offenses and walls built up high.
Of course, right?
This is (a little of) what the Word has to say about Unity in The Message Bible:
"You must get along with each other. You must learn to be considerate of one another, cultivating a life in common." 1Cor1:10 The Message
"He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ’s followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ’s body, the church, until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God’s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ." Eph4:11-13 The Message
" So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it." Colossians3:13-14 The Message
"Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing." 1Pet3:8 The Message
So good, right? Not easy... but Truth!
The Power of Unity is in finding that point of agreement --not on everything... but on the most important Thing.
The Importance of Unity? Well... we started out talking about that one. It's so that we can be Kingdom people who love each other and who love the world... so that they truly will know us by our love!
This week we talked about how Life Happens in the church and while we could have dug in deeper, the overall purpose was to remind us that yes --there are things wrong within the Church... just as there are things wrong within our country... But God! God is still for her and He is still at work within both the Church and our nation!
